P6M Local Poetry Workshop

Mr Magowan's class took part in a poetry competition to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of AE Russell. He was a poet, artist and inventor who was born in Lurgan and lived here until he was eleven. He attended a local primary school and was inspired to write poetry by the natural beauty around him, especially in Lurgan Park.

A plaque to his memory is erected in William Street on the front of the house he lived in. The class took part in poetry workshops with local poet Martelle McPartland and enjoyed a tour around Brownlow house to get inspiration for writing their poems. Colin Hassard an award winning poet from Banbridge judged the poems and the class winners are Charlotte Cook for her poem called The Lost Child, Hannah Whalley for her poem Reliving the Months, Martha McTernaghin for her poem called The Secret Garden and Nathan Anderson for his poem entitled ‘I can’t wait for the war to be over’.
